Scholarships
Every year the Chaminade Music Club awards prize money to young musicians. The awards are presented to vocal and instrumental musicians on alternating years. Instrumental competition will be held in 2011.

The first prize is $500, second prize is $300, and third prize is $200. It is hoped that these awards might be helpful to the winners in their future study of serious music.

  2. Students must be currently studying with a private teacher. Application forms shall include a recommendation from the private teacher.
  3. Students must meet one of the following requirements:
    1. Be a resident of one of the following communities:
Attleboro, North Attleboro, Plainville, Wrentham, Foxboro, Mansfield, Norton, Taunton, Dighton, Rehoboth, Seekonk, Franklin, Sharon, Canton, Walpole, Easton, Cumberland RI, Pawtucket RI.

    3. Be a student of a Chaminade Music Club member in good standing.
  4. Applicants must present two selections from different musical periods: Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionist, or 20th-21st Century. All repertoire must be in what is generally understood to be a classical idiom. Questions about suitability of repertoire should be addressed to the Chair of Music Awards Committee. Final decisions of suitable repertoire will rest with the Chaminade Music Club Executive Board.
  5. Total time of the applicant's performance should not exceed fifteen minutes.
  6. Applicants are required to perform their selections from memory. It is better for a student to select music which they can perform well rather than to select music that is too difficult.
  7. Three copies of music for each selection must be provided for the judges at the time of the audition.
  8. The Club will assist the candidate in securing an accompianist, if needed.
  9. The Chaminade Music Club reserves the right to withhold the presentations of any prize if, in the opinion of the judges, there is no qualified recipient.

Scholarship Competition 2009 Winners

Meg Lowey, First Prize winner - note of thanks:

"Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you put into your Auditions and Awards on March 7th, and for honoring me with first place in the competition! I had a wonderful time performing, as well as listening to the other singers. The comment sheets from the judges have been extremely useful, and it's always great to have feedback from an outside source.

In May I will be attending the semi-finals of Classical Singer Magazine's High School Voice Competition in New York City. The money that you have so kindly awarded me will help to defray my costs, so that I can enjoy the convention and continue pursuing my passion.

I am so grateful that Chaminade is supportive of young singers like myself. Thanks once again for everything you do for us! I appreciate it so much!

Sincerely, Meg Lowey"

Annual Music Club Awards

The Chaminade Music Club held its 50th annual auditions awards concert on Sunday, March 7, 2010 at the Florence Hayward Sweet Club House, Peck and Bank Streets, Attleboro. This year the competition was open to high school vocalists (alternate years for high school instrumentalists). The prizes were: $500 first, $300 second, $200 third. A contestant must either reside in the Greater Attleboro area or a nearby city/town, or receive training with a member of the Chaminade Music Club.

 The winners were:

 First prize
Meg Lowey
Foxboro High School

Second prize
Kaileigh Riess
Foxboro High School

Third prize
James Vita
Bishop Feehan High School

Additional performers were: Grace Norton, Jacqueline M. Walsh School for the Arts; Danielle Lavieri, Foxboro High School; Jake Humphrey, Bishop Feehan High School

It is hoped that these awards will be helpful to the winners for their further study of serious music.

Benefits for all of the participants include the experience of a solo performance in front of a live audience, as well as constructive critiques from a panel of professional musicians.

The students appreciate the performing opportunity and awards. As Chris Anderson, First Prize winner in 2009, wrote, “This was my first competitive performance and I thought it was a great opportunity; not only will the generous prize money help me with further musical endeavors, but the experience of playing for a panel of judges, in addition to meeting fellow musicians, is one I find invaluable...One does not encounter enough serious musicians on a regular basis, and this competition brings them together for an experience I won't forget."

This program was supported in part by a grant from the Attleboro Cultural Council, a local agency which receives funding from the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a State agency.
